VIVA is the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security’s Program that has been promoting the sustainability of the Italian wine sector since 2011. The purpose of the Program is to create a production model that respects the environment and enhances the territory, to protect the quality of Italian wines and provide opportunities on the international market. VIVA provides for the public standard in measuring and improving the sustainability performance of viticulture in Italy.
The number of memberships in the program continues to grow, testifying to the well-established recognition of the VIVA Program and the great importance it has for companies, consumers, and all stakeholders in the wine sector with a view to a transition toward increasingly sustainable production and consumption models.

A TOOL FOR
MEASURING SUSTAINABILITY
Galileo said: “measure what is measurable and make measurable what is not”, demonstrating the importance of being able to set parameters for even the most complex concepts and convey information in a synthetic, clear, and standardized way.
Ministry of Ecological Transition and OPERA – Research Center for Sustainable Development in Agriculture of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – have developed four Indicators with the purpose of providing companies with the possibility of having a diagnosis of their sustainability performance, with a 360° approach that includes all the pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Economic, Social and Cultural. The indicators were created also contemplating the climatic and territorial differences of our country and are therefore applicable to all national realities.
